Remembering Ryan McCabe

Yesterday marked a year since we lost our great friend, Ryan McCabe šŸ’™

Not only was Ryan an incredible boss whose drive and determination pushed all of us to be better, but he was so much more than that. He truly was one of a kind. The community Ryan created at Odro is what has held us together over the last year, and that speaks volumes about what Ryan could do with a group of people. You all saw us as the ā€œvideo peopleā€ with countless silly videos and really got to see the magic that will always be Odro, but we thought it would be nice to share some stories from the team that showed what didn’t make it on to LinkedIn.

Jo:

One night I’ll never forget was a last minute sub crawl around Glasgow. Ryan created rules that somehow got us all drunker than planned. Time limits for drinks. One pint and one spirit. No holding on to anything on the subway which left us all battered and bruised. The highlight was when we walked past a fruit shop and he just said ā€œJo, film thisā€ and proceeded to hit Dale with an orange with perfect aim. He also text my PT saying I wouldn’t be making it for my Saturday morning session, which of course, I didn’t. I woke up the next morning to a text from Ryan and thought ā€œI’m getting sackedā€ but instead it said ā€œJo send me that video of me skudding Dale with an orange šŸ¤£ā€. I of course obliged (I’ll post the video in the comments).

Ciara:

Me, Amanda, Dougie and Ryan were at an event in London, peer pressured Dougie into paying for everyone to go to the Karaoke Bar. (Of course he was a sh*tebag if he didn’t) Sang every Scottish song we could, did a rendition of ā€œUnwrittenā€ and ended the night with kebabs, cans from the hotel shop, Amanda slagging Ryan for his shit socks, Amanda getting slagged for being weird and slim shady look alike and I broke my tooth on a bag of Brandy Balls sweets!

Claire:

We went to Mere Golf Resort & Spa for a leadership residential trip. Ryan, as always, brought his competitiveness to everything we did. After dinner and a few drinks, we played a game that Susie had invented called "shleeping". The aim of the game was to find the most random place possible and pretend you were asleep. True to form, Ryan took it to the extreme by climbing up on top of a golf buggy but that wasn't good enough, oh no, he then climbed on top of the roof to shleep up there. Needless to say, he won the game hands down! I am surprised we never got kicked out!

Hannah:

The first time I ever went for after work drinks at Odro was very impromptu and we ended up in The Merchant in Glasgow and I had to do my 2 truths and a lie and out of 15 people there, Ryan was the only one who got it right šŸ˜‚

- I’d had a cardiac arrest

- got banned from a bar for 3 months

- got mistaken for Cheryl Cole in an airport

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Defos dented my ego that he guessed immediately I’d never be mistaken for Cheryl Cole šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Anna:

I don’t have many pictures with Ryan. Mostly because I’m camera shy and always the self-designated photo-reporter on our nights out. But we chatted a lot, and it’s silly, but it’s the small things you miss most. Like our lunch chats, because for some reason, he really loved everything I brought.

Didn’t matter if it was pasta or salad — he always complimented my food and said one day I’d have to bring some for him (or at least show him how it’s made). So that’s what I started to so. It’s a small thing, a fragment of the confident, shiny personality he had — but that was Ryan: a people-person, always hyping us up, even over lunch.

Harry:

I'd only been at Odro a couple of months and was slyly trying to have a flutter and watch Cheltenham 2024 on our phones and laptops as we were too scared to ask Ryan if we could put it on so soon in our new Odro roles. As soon as the Boss found out we were keen to watch it all he wheeled across the biggest TV in the office he could find, got it up and running and got some pools and music going to create a strong office vibe around each race.

Aynslie:

No-one motivated you, or opened your eyes to the possibilities like Ryan. Always with some kind of humorous twist, even when sometimes the situation really wasn't funny . Like the time a debtor called one of us a Pus***! He just sent me this šŸ‘‡

Tommy:

Ryan could handle his whiskey shots a lot better than I could. We shared a lift home, and not long into the journey I found myself bent over at the side of the road… regretting every whiskey. Ryan was out the car alongside me, rubbing my back in support. Definitely not my proudest moment - but Ryan, seeing the hilarious side of it, turned it into a running wind-up.

Ryan always went the extra mile to make Odro feel like more than just a workplace. I’ll always remember the day he took a few of us to Gleneagles for a round of golf. He looked after every detail – from the early-morning pickup and breakfast stop, ā€œscooby snacksā€ to keep us going round the course, a pint and pie at the halfway house, and lunch to finish. It was the kind of day that sums Ryan up - thoughtful, generous, and all about making sure everyone had a great time.

Antonia:

The Bush Tucker trial challenge was a memory I’ll never forget. Attempting to eat the bugs as quickly as you could while Ryan is next to you saying ā€˜Oh Nooo’ in his Australian accent, then cracking up at Charles ā€˜Not the Dijon’ šŸ˜‚ Ryan always had a knack to make any situation funny and always got involved, even in this challenge, he even ate the bugs too!

We miss you every day, Ryan.
