Why we think people are consuming more video content than ever before
In 2018, people watched an average of 1.5 hours per day of online video. Wyzowl’s 2021 survey shows this has risen to an average of over 2.5 hours per day. Why are people watching more video content than ever before? Well we have a few ideas.
We’re living in the future. Generally, wifi and data are better and more available. Gone are the days of buffering on dial up. No more “I’ll have to watch the video when I get home to wifi cause I need to save my data”.
Talking about COVID again (sorry). We’re at home more. Due to a certain pandemic, we’re not speaking to as many people in person so are we filling the gaps of human interaction watching videos?
Powering on-line. As loads of things came to a halt others kept going but just in a more covid-safe environment. Video court cases, video recruitment and even video dancing lessons. Adapt and continue.
Give the people what they want. There is more video to consume! 86% of businesses used video as a marketing tool in 2021 (Wyzowl). This was 85% in 2020, 87% in 2019, 81% in 2018, 63% in 2017 and 61% in 2016. Simple supply and demand.
Knowledge is power. Videos help us make more informed purchase decisions. 96% of people have watched an explainer video to learn more about a product or service. Would be silly to not have one.
“Have you seen this?!” Our friends share videos with us. People are twice as likely to share video content with their friends than any other type of content, including social media posts, blog posts/articles and product pages.
Working hard or hardly working. If we do have to go into the office, people won’t talk to us if we put headphones in and watch an “informative” video.
Our type on paper. We’re addicted to Love Island and have to watch every single video meme that goes along with it.
“Do you even lift?” We’ve decided our gym membership was a waste of money so we canceled it to watch home workout videos from the comfort of our sofa instead.
Omg so cute. We can’t get enough of baby penguins falling over.
There are nine totally fact checked reasons why in 2021 we’re consuming video content more than ever before. 18 hours a week to be precise. When you put it like that 18 hours of baby penguins does seem a bit much.
